Over the years the name ponniyin selvan has had many interpretations. The obvious one, said in the novel, is that of boy saved by river ponni, like saving her own son. The word Pon in Tamil means wealth / gold. Hence, the name could be interpreted as son of wealth. Prince Arul mozhi Varma later become Raja raja chola, his time as king is regarded as Golden Era of Chola empire.
