Because the movie makes a jump of 18 years after the opening scene, many fans believed that the movie takes place 18 years after Anarchia - La notte del giudizio (2014). However, Leo (Frank Grillo) clearly hasn't aged 18 years from how he appeared in Purge: Anarchy. In his talk with Senator Roan (Elizabeth Mitchell), he actually confirms that his son died a few years ago, so Purge: Anarchy may have taken place 1 or 2 years before at most. Since the Purge is now in its 25th year, the opening scene took place during the 7th Purge, and Purge: Anarchy possibly during the 23rd or 24th.
