Director Thomas Carter had made a name for himself as a high-school basketball-player, in real life, prior to starring as "James Hayward" on the 1978-1981 TV series *The White Shadow*...which is also where he got his start as a director. Moreover, *Coach Carter* makes references to several episodes of the series.
