For this film, Jordan Peele became the fifth African-American filmmaker to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director, following John Singleton for Boyz n the Hood - Strade violente (1991), Lee Daniels for Precious (2009), Steve McQueen for 12 anni schiavo (2013), and Barry Jenkins for Moonlight (2016). Peele also became the fourth filmmaker to receive Academy Award nominations for producing, directing, and writing a debut feature film, following Orson Welles for Quarto potere (1941) (though Welles isn't listed as a nominee for producing, since at the time, the award for Best Picture went to the studio rather than the individual producers), Warren Beatty for Il paradiso può attendere (1978), and James L. Brooks for Voglia di tenerezza (1983).
