Prior to Marcello Mastroianni, the role of Snà poraz was offered to Dustin Hoffman. He declined after he couldn't convince Federico Fellini to shoot the movie in direct sound rather than dubbing it afterwards. Hoffman feared dubbing himself would compromise his performance.
