In his previous film, UHF - I vidioti (1989), 'Weird Al' Yankovic wrote the role of Philo for his friend, Joel Hodgson. Hodgson had to pass on the role in order to begin working on Mystery Science Theater 3000 (1988) as both creator and the show's original test subject. This film features Jonah Ray, one of the show's current test subjects. Ray has also released a cover album of songs by "Weird Al".
