Matthew Broderick's mother, the playwright and painter Patricia Broderick, was a mentor to Kenneth Lonergan and introduced him to the Gerard Manley Hopkins poem "Spring and Fall" which contains the title of the movie. The film's working title had been "Bus Film" until Lonergan realized that the character of Margaret in the poem "seemed so on the money for what was going on with Anna Paquin's character internally."
