The story of Jullio and Ligaya from the film echoes the forbidden love of "Mariin" and "Gatduke" characters in the folktale about the origin of Marinduque, the Philippine province where the couple in the movie hails from. In both cases, the parent of the woman doesn't approve of the man. Also, both couples planned to get away from their respective predicament only meeting a tragic end.
