In the Hammerhead Sharks episode Lindsay and the firm go to California to defend accused murderer Dennis Mills in a case that would result in his immediate receipt of the death penalty if convicted. This episode came out in 2002 on Superbowl weekend when the show was at its height; it was infact the highest rated episode of the series. The plot is clearly in a post 90s world, and before Governor Gavin Newsome began deliberating to remove the death penalty. Newsome put a moratorium on the death penalty in 2019.
