CIA director Mark Morel stated that torture techniques were not used like they are in the film. However John Kariakou, who formerly worked for the CIA in Afghanistan became a whistleblower on the torture the US government used to get information against the Taliban after 9/11. He was sentenced to 30 months in federal prison for doing so. He also worked with the real life counterpart of Jessica Chanstain's Maya.
