In August 2022 Michael Mann released a novel that served as a prequel and sequel to the events portrayed in the film. The novel gives background on how McCauley, Shiherlis and Cerrito pulled previous jobs in Chicago, it also tells how Shiherlis met Charlene in Vegas and how McCauley was formerly in a relationship with a woman and his it resulted in his '30 seconds' rule.
