In 1963 film, "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World," Milton Berle chases Terry Thomas up a hill, yelling: "I'll kill ya!! I'll kill ya!!" Might Scorsese, as film buff (see "Hugo"), have put the exact words into the mouth of the 'money guy,' clutching at De Niro's legs in the final shootout scene? From excellent essay on "Taxi Driver," in "Story Grid," by Tanya Lovetti, this excerpt of her essay: " More shots fire out. The money guy yells and tries to hold onto Travis' legs as he climbs the stairs: 'I'll kill ya. I'll kill ya ' " This coincidence is odd, & darkly funny, given that some critics view shootout to be almost humorous.
