John Malkovich was considered to play President James Marshall in this film, since he worked with Wolfgang Petersen before on Nel centro del mirino (1993), in which he played Clint Eastwood's nemesis Mitch Leary, who goes by aliases like John Booth, James Carney, et cetera. But he turned it down to be in Con Air (1997).
