A popular fan-theory speculates that the Resurrection Stone does not actually bring a soul back from the dead, but rather produces a shade of the person in order to convince the user that they must die. In the Deathly Hallows story, the second brother conjures his dead lost love whose image makes him so depressed that he kills himself, allowing Death to take him. In this film, Harry uses the stone to see the faces of his dead loved ones who, completely out of character for all of them, convince him he must die.
