Superman breaks the fourth wall and smiles at the audience in the last shot of this movie. This is the same way Richard Donner ended his last movie, Il presagio (1976); the main character, Damien, breaks the fourth wall and smiles at the audience. In fact, both Superman (1978) and Superman II (1980) end with Superman looking at the camera and smiling at us the viewers; just like both The Omen (1976) and La maledizione di Damien (1978) end with Damien smiling at the viewers.
