An alternate ending was filmed in which Joey starts to light a cigarette during Naylor's press conference and Nick swats the cigarette out of his mouth, embarrassing himself in front of the cameras and disgracing his career as a tobacco lobbyist. Director Jason Reitman preferred the ending in which Nick accepts personal responsibility for his choices. Similarly, a scene was cut of Nick attempting to smoke a cigarette against his doctor's orders, and consequently passing out from intolerance.
