After Mike Evans left the show following completion of the first season, Norman Lear had trouble re-casting the role until he reportedly saw Damon Evans in a TV commercial and decided he would be an acceptable replacement. When Damon was released from the series a few seasons later, Mike returned on a recurring basis. When Mike ended up leaving for the second time, his absence was explained by having Lionel and Jenny separate, and eventually divorce.
