Clark Gable's and Leslie Howard's characters do not have a complete dialogue between them throughout the whole film. Rhett Butler apologizes to Ashley Wilkes for spoiling his guests' cigars and brandy for telling the southerners that the yankees were better equipped to win the war. Ashley Wilkes only nods but does not talk. Towards the end when Melanie was dying, Rhett is telling Scarlett that Melanie was a special lady, Ashley overhearing this, echoes Rhett's remark but Rhett does not respond. After the "political" meeting on Decatur Road, Rhett is bringing a "drunk" Ashley to his home and later carries the wounded Ashley to bed after the Northern general's soldiers leave, but no dialogue takes place.
