Due to ongoing contract negotiations, it was uncertain as to whether Patrick Stewart would return for future seasons. As such, the ambiguous cliffhanger ending seen here could have allowed the show to kill off the Picard character and alter the command structure of the Enterprise permanently. Stewart opted to return and filmed several more seasons as well as feature films and spin-offs.
