In the film, the space vampires can switch bodies with regular humans. Either co-habiting the body with the host's mind (as in spirit possession), or displacing the previous owner's spirit. Among the plot twists in the second half of the film is that they can also reshape their new bodies, to match their preferred form. These makes them shape-shifters, which is closer to the traditional depiction of vampires in literature.
