The rifles used by the police on the rooftops circa 1952 are lever-action Winchesters, the same style as used in the old west nearly 70 years earlier. Later an officer is seen holding a Thompson submachine gun, a weapon made popular about 30 years earlier by gangsters. Police special weapons and tactics (SWAT) teams would not come into use in California for another 15 years.
