When Katsushiro first meets Shino, she tells him she's a boy (by nodding only, she doesn't let her voice be heard) and in the ensuing scuffle, he accidentally touches her breasts. It's only then that he realizes it's actually a girl, and steps back.Among the grandiose visuals and cinematic merits of The Seven Samurai, this scene is rarely mentioned, if at all. However, it's perhaps more groundbreaking than any other. This film was made in 1954, and a man actually touching a woman's breasts onscreen in Hollywood, or in Japanese cinema, was unthinkable (even if the script made it so that it happened by accident.) It was an era when even the bedroom scenes often featured two separate beds instead of a single, large size adult bed, so as not to show even a slight reminder that people actually sleep together.
