The scene where Ed, Einstein, and Catherine talk about Einstein's family in the cafe is notably careful about how they discuss Einstein's children. Catherine is the one who jumps in to answer Ed's question about how many children Einstein had with the answer, "two boys." In fact, Einstein and his first wife Mileva had a child before the two sons that was kept secret. It is unclear exactly why, but believed to be due to the child's congenital ill health. Letters from Einstein suggest it was a girl, and most Einstein biographers suspect the infant died very young. In the film scene, Einstein also seems reluctant to talk about his son, Eduard. There is good reason for this--Eduard was institutionalized for schizophrenia and estranged from his father when Albert Einstein immigrated to the US. Though father and son corresponded before and after the breakdown that landed Eduard in an asylum, their relationship was rocky when Einstein fled the nazis.
