A 1938 promotional brochure for the film added a background tale for the Evil Queen. She supposedly gained her magical powers through selling her own body and soul to the evil spirits which inhabited the Harz mountains of Germany. The Harz is a real-life highland area in northern Germany. From the 10th century and until the 20th century, the Harz had a thriving mining industry.
