The original screenplay clearly specified that the action was set on LV-426, the same planetoid from Alien (1979) and Aliens - Scontro finale (1986). The idea was actually kept throughout many script re-writes and even filming. Director Sir Ridley Scott had originally wanted to shoot scenes of the surface of planet LV-426 in Wadi Rum in Jordany or in the Moroccan desert, but due to political unrest in the areas, this was moved to Iceland. Scott wanted to explain the contrast between LV-426's clear appearance in this film and the dark one in Alien (1979) by periodic electric storms and volcanic eruptions, which seriously affected the visibility on the planet's surface in the original film. In the end, it was decided during post-production to change the planet into LV-223, a neighboring planetoid of LV-426 within the same system.
