The film went through many screenplay drafts and many titles, starting with 'Untitled Alien Prequel' and then going from 'Alien: Engineers', 'Alien: Genesis' to 'Alien: Origins'. Because over time, the focus got to be so much on the Engineers and the Aliens started to become more of a footnote, other titles were conceived, like 'Alien: Tomb of the Gods', 'LV-426' and 'Paradise'. The final title 'Prometheus' came as a surprise to many, as it had never been thrown around before. However, the mythology of the Greek god Prometheus who helped humans by giving them fire nicely summarized the theme of Engineers creating and guiding mankind. The ship in the film was originally called the 'Magellan' (named after the 16th century Portuguese explorer), but was then also renamed 'Prometheus'.
