Arthur "Fonzie" Fonzarelli was originally named Arthur Maschiarelli (Maschiarelli being creator Garry Marshall's father's original surname) and nicknamed "Mash." When ABC first picked up the show, they had Marshall change the character's name because they felt that "Mash" might remind people of MASH (1972), a popular show on a rival network.
