Charles Van Doren's red Mercedes, seen when Dick Goodwin visits Cornwall, is a Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster. In the U.S. they sold for $10,950 (about $96,000 in 2020 dollars). (At the time, the roadster cost considerably more than the more famous "Gullwing" coupe version.) Recent prices have been in the $1 million to $1.2 million range.
