"Theodore Rex" was originally intended for a wide theatrical release. But, the film had disappointing test screenings in February 1996 in cities including Las Vegas; Des Moines; Providence, R.I.; and Portland, ME. New Line Cinema knew, given the combination of its sizable budget, poor test reception and the high cost of a theatrical marketing campaign, that this film would not have made a profit if it were released in theaters. So, to cut their losses, New Line made the decision to go the safer route and instead released this film straight-to-video, where they felt this would've fared better.
