The Marines are armed with M4A1 Carbines and M16-A4 rifles. There are also M203 40mm grenade launchers and M249 Squad Automatic Weapons. The SAW is being replaced by the M27, a version of the HK 416, which is similar in size to the M4 but built to heavier duty specifications, enables firing from open or closed bolt, and able to sustain heavier volumes of automatic fire and remain reliable and accurate. In all tests the M27 compares favorably to the M249 in terms of accuracy, reliability, controllabilty, portability and user friendliness. It also uses the same magazines annd optics as the M16/M4.
