This story was inspired by Arthur C. Clarke's 1948 short story, Sentinel of Eternity, which was first published in 1951. Later renamed The Sentinel it about the discovery of an ancient tetrahedral object found on the moon that was transmitting unknown signals into outer space. The transmissions cease when humans set off an atomic blast. The premise is that it was a means of detecting a fateful stage of development in human technology, with no one ever learning who has been alerted nor what the response may be.As the premise developed into this movie (on which the 2001 novel would be based), the monolith came to represent a metaphor not unlike that of a toddler who grows to the point that it can touch a doorbell. Its presence serves to compel the toddler to seek the next level of development, although it is not known what that next level may be. Clarke himself likened The Sentinel to an acorn and 2001 to a tree that was nurtured from multiple sources.
