In the prequel novel 'Alien: Covenant - Origins' by Alan Dean Foster, Lopé mentions the security people he is recruiting for the colony expedition were explicitly not meant to be 'intellectually over-qualified' or 'superb tactical fighters', fearing they'd might challenge his promised position as 'Planetary Head of Security' in the colony. So a lot of the incompetence and questionable judgment displayed by the security crew may be the direct resultant of Lopé recruiting those not particularly bright or able to think for themselves.
