In addition to the cameos and tribute to Ramis, the film also pays homage to John Candy, who was originally approached to play Louis in the original Ghostbusters (Acchiappafantasmi) (1984), but turned down the part: the Dean of Higgins University, where Abby and Holtzmann work, is named Thomas Shanks. Tommy Shanks was one of John Candy's characters in Second City TV (1976). Candy also appeared in the music video for Ray Parker Jr.'s "Ghostbusters."
