In an interview by Claudia Cragg with the film's source novelist Joanne Greenberg, entitled 'A Conversation with Joanne Greenberg' (2006), Greenberg recalled that she was not consulted on any aspect of the film's production and was contacted only by Swedish actress Bibi Andersson. Greenberg recalled that Andersson told her that the movie's producers had said she could not be consulted as she was "hopelessly insane".
