This was the first movie in Universal's proposed Dark Universe franchise, but due to the film's lukewarm reception and box office, Universal issued a statement that Bill Condon's 'Bride of Frankenstein' had been postponed until further notice, in order to give the makers more time to prepare the movie. For a few years, Universal maintained that their Dark Universe franchise was still alive and in development. However, in 2019 they announced that both Bride of Frankenstein and the shared universe had been shelved indefinitely, and that they were going to focus on stand-alone monster movies, such as L'uomo invisibile (2020).
