Although the picture won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, Soviet authorities prevented director Vladimir Menshov from traveling to the ceremony as they had suspicions about his politics, and he learned of his victory by telegram. Author and journalist Masha Gessen recounts an anecdote that Menshov telegraphed back, 'MOSCOW DOESN'T BELIEVE STOP IN TEARS STOP'.
