In previous drafts of the script, Bradley Cooper considered having Jackson swim out into the ocean and end his life similar to the endings of È nata una stella (1937) and È nata una stella (1954). Cooper also considered an homage ending to Kris Kristofferson's role in È nata una stella (1976) where Jackson dies after crashing his car.
