Simon Pegg and Justin Lin made the decision of making Sulu gay, as a nod to George Takei, who has since become a prominent LGBT rights activist. However, Takei has since stated his disagreement with this decision as that was not Gene Roddenberry's intention for the character Hikaru Sulu.
