In Season One, Episode 9 of the NBC television series "Fame" entitled "But Seriously, Folks" that aired on March 4, 1982, the character of "Danny Amatullo" aspires to become a stand-up comedian, while being seduced into the world of narcotics due to the insecurity of his talent and the disapproval of his father. This was an explicit reworking of the main storyline in Alan Parker's 1980 film, portrayed by Barry Miller as the "Ralph Garcy" character, whose critically acclaimed performance contained powerful and controversial anti-establishment statements against the institutions of family, organized religion, and God. The episode is a heavily revisionist Reagan-era attempt to erase any lingering memories of both the original character and Miller's performance, concluding with a musical number whose lyrics blatantly praise both God and family, as well as changing the film's characterization of the father figure from being a physically abusive, jealous, and violent criminal who despises his son's abilities into an ultimately benign and forgiving parent who lovingly accepts and recognizes his son's comedic gifts.
