This movie didn't explicitly mention that the apocalypse was because of a nuclear war. Screenwriter Gary Whitta preferred to leave clues of the apocalypse instead. There are a few clues that indicate nuclear war, like the ash falling like snow at the very beginning of the film, the large bomb craters the characters are sometimes near and that all characters have to wear Sun glasses whenever they're outside because of ultraviolet rays from the sun due to the nuclear bombs that were launched that weakened the ozone layer. Eli asks Claudia if she became blind from "the flash" or the sun after.
