Show producers have said they changed the name from Bruce Banner to David Banner to humanize the character; and pull him away from the Superman hero archetypes and stereotypes where all the characters have alliterative first and last names. (Lois Lane, Clark Kent, Peter Parker, Lana Lang, John Jones, etc.) So they changed the name to David. Bruce is now the character's middle name; and you can see that in the opening credits when Bill Bixby is standing next to his own grave, which has the name "David Bruce Banner" emblazoned on it.
