Tess Schofield, the film's costume designer, observed that the disparity between the uniforms of the opposing forces extended well beyond their countries of origin. She said: "Russell was very particular about authenticity, like which regiments people came from. Fortunately, it was quite easy to access records on the Anzac army. Information on the Ottoman army is more cryptic and often conflicting, and it was sobering every time I hit a dead end trying to track down the facts. We learned the Imperial War Office had called for all the fabrics in Constantinople to enable them to keep manufacturing uniforms, so there was a mixture of civilian and military dress. It was pretty ramshackle, not strict and polished, like the Anzacs."
