Brian Cox was interested in reprising his role as William Stryker from X-Men 2 (2003), using the digital skin-grafting visual effects used in X-Men: Conflitto finale (2006) on Sir Patrick Stewart and Sir Ian McKellen. The filmmakers thought it would be easier and cheaper to cast a younger actor instead, and hired Danny Huston.
