According to Inside 'Dr. No' (2000), the introduction of James Bond is a homage to a technique from the William Dieterle movie Il conquistatore del Messico (1939), starring Paul Muni. The technique is a series of close-ups of the character without revealing the face, cross-cutting with the other characters in the scene and the gambling table. Finally, the face of the person is revealed as he states his name.
