Alexis Bledel decided to leave the show before season 5 began production, so her character is written off by explaining she went to back to Gilead to fight. Creator Bruce Miller revealed on an interview that that was his idea for the Emily storyline for the season nonetheless, so Bledel's exit only made this happened off screen and immediately, rather than throughout the season and with the actress playing it.
