This movie was particularly controversial when it won the Oscar for Best Picture over the more critically-favored, respected, and commercial hit I segreti di Brokeback Mountain (2005). The Academy was accused of homophobia, and many said that Crash (2004) benefitted by the Academy's ingrained homophobia. Many felt that Crash (2004) was a safer option since it tackled racism and tolerance, whereas Brokeback Mountain (2005) was a riskier option that the Academy, even at its most progressive, wasn't going to celebrate. Many also felt that Crash (2004) winning over Brokeback Mountain (2005) cemented the notion that the Academy is an out-of-date institution.
