Like the original 1974 novel, the film heavily implies, but does not confirm, that Haydon (Colin Firth) and Prideaux (Mark Strong) are lovers. Six years after the film had its world premiere, Le Carre published a sequel called A Legacy of Spies, which revisited many of the same characters, and in which he finally confirmed Haydon as being Prideaux's "nemesis and former lover."
