The names of the characters George and Martha are a direct reference to the play, "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" by Edward Albee, about an elderly couple who want children so badly they invent a dead son. Their names in the play are an ironic reference to the "Father and Mother" of the United States, George and Martha Washington.
