The character of Ally Allston is based on Alexandra Allston, one of several super-villains to have taken the mantle of Parasite in the comics. Lois calls Ally a "parasite" in reference to this. Online reviewers noticed an uncomfortable similarity between Ally Allston's initial plot and the infamous "sex cult" of which Allison Mack, who starred in the Superman drama Smallville (2001), was part.
