Spock was originally not in this film because Leonard Nimoy was pursuing stage work and other roles to distance himself from the series and his character. Nimoy had become bitter over perceived mistreatment by Gene Roddenberry while making Star Trek (1966), as well as not receiving more residuals or licensing royalties for his image as Spock. They originally thought about introducing a new character named Xon, who, unlike Spock, was a full-blooded Vulcan. But Xon would never appear on screen thanks to Nimoy's return as Spock.
